Date Posted: 10/18/1998 9:34:42 AM Document Description: Although the NTCIP is a standard for establishing interoperability, one must go beyond the specification of a common protocol to ensure interoperability of implementations. A Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) is required to ensure interoperability between two products that claim to be NTCIP compliant. For the NTCIP specification to be acceptable for the marketplace, the standard is required to support optional features (as is required with other standard protocols). The manufacturer of the device must document which optional portions of the standard the device supports. The PICS allows each manufacturer to clarify the functionality of its device in addition to the elements of the NTCIP protocol that the device supports.
