Description of Document:
NTCIP 1209 is a data dictionary standard defining those data elements which may be used for monitoring and controlling transportation sensor system (TSS) devices for detecting and communicating certain traffic parameters. A TSS device can be a loop detector, a video image processing system, or could use other sensing technology. NTCIP 1209 also describes a Zone, Virtual Zone, Sensor, and how zones can be logically grouped together.

BACKGROUND -- NTCIP 1209 defines objects for devices that sense the presence or similar characteristics of vehicles. These definitions are intended for detection devices that range from smart inductive loop amplifiers to machine vision and microwave technologies. The NTCIP 1209 is maintained by the Transportation Sensor Systems (TSS) Working Group, originally named the Advanced Sensor WG. During development, the NTCIP Project previously referenced this document as TS 3.SEN or TS 3.TSS.

TAKE NOTE OF MULTIPLE VERSIONS -- The "shopping cart" above initiates the downloading of 1209 version v01 for a limited time.

VERSION v01 -- In January 2000, NTCIP Standards Bulletin B0042 sent NTCIP 1209 v01.09, Object Definitions for TSS, as a User Comment Draft. In September 2001, the Joint Committee accepted 1209 v01.11 as a UCD2. In February 2002, NTCIP Standards Bulletin B0070 sent 1209 v01.13 for a second round of comments. In February 2003, the Joint Committee accepted 1209 v01.18 as a Recommended Standard. In April 2004, NTCIP Standards Bulletin B0093 sent 1209 v01.18d to the SDOs for balloting and approval. NTCIP 1209 v01.18e (with disposition of ballot comment UC0347) was approved by AASHTO in October 2004; approved by NEMA in February 2005; and approved by ITE in May 2005. NTCIP 1209 v01 is Jointly Approved.

In December 2006 -- The published version of the Joint Standards Publication NTCIP 1209:2005 v01.19 (November 2005 edition) was available as either a PDF download, or for order as a printed hardcopy with a softcover. To order the standard, point to the mouse-over menu "Deployment" >> Order Standards.

An NTCIP MIB file is available. To request access, see the instructions at Library >> MIBs.

In June 2005, Ralph Boaz was appointed as the new TSS WG chair.

VERSION v02 -- In 2004, the TSS WG began drafting version v02. In August 2007, the Joint Committee accepted 1209 v02 as a UCD, and NTCIP Standards Bulletin B0124 sent 1209 v02.10 to AASHTO, ITE, and NEMA for review and comment. NTCIP 1209 v02 is a "major version" revision, and now includes: systems engineering information, support for multiple sensor technologies, data elements for machine vision, and support for object backward compatibility. Users should see subclause 2.1.3 on page 10, "How this Standard is Organized," and also visit the new Annex D, "Documentation of Revisions."
